(LCMP 189; DE 2.293–94) Diana at Her Bath: Theophany as Vision and Text
What is “the eternal phantasm?” Foucault's most significant early en- gagement
with such issues appears in his essay of 1964, “The Prose of Actaeon,” devoted
to the work of Klossowski. The essay's title refers to the writer's subtle and
phantasmagoric retelling of the myth of Diana and Actaeon in Le bain de Diane,
which Foucault pronounces to be “doubtless of all the texts of Klossowski, the
one closest to ...

Herve Castanet Inhuman Diana Pierre Klossowski revisits the insistent question
of the presence/ absence of the gaze in what is perhaps his most vivid text -
Diana at Her Bath, of 1956. A reading of this text allows us to understand what is
at stake in the act of contemplation as well as in what painting (magic) gives to
seeing. It takes up the story of Diana (Artemis) and Actaeon, recounted notably by
Ovid in his Metamorphoses, and forever present in memory: Diana, goddess of
the hunt, ...

Because of the unidealized bodies in these two prints, the naked woman is
sometimes discussed as a pendant to Diana (possibly as Diana's nymph or
attendant).20 Diana, as the eternal virgin, is desirable but chaste. In Rembrandt's
version she reclines on a riverbank, indicating that the narrative likely refers to a
moment from Ovid's Metamorphoses when Actaeon surprises Diana at her bath.
While the viewer stands in for Actaeon's admiring gaze, Diana takes the form of a

When the hunter Actaeon sees Diana (Artemis) bathing, she transforms him into
a stag, which is then eaten by his own dogs. The story of Diana's revenge on
Actaeon is depicted as early as about 460 B.C., by the Pan Painter on an Attic
redfigured vase, in the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, and also by Titian in his
Death of Actaeon (1570–1575), in the National Gallery in London. Paintings
showing Diana at her bath with only the viewer of the painting as a voyeur are
more common.
