Timeskipper

Author: Stefano Benni
Publisher: Europa Editions Incorporated
ISBN:
Pages: 390
Year: 2008
One late-winter morning as he is "hop-hiking" downhill toward his character-building destination, a vomit-yellow cube surrounded by a garden of barbarously unkempt weeds known as the Bisacconi elementary school, Stefano Benni's young hero encounters a peculiar man - as big as a mountain and as filthy as a garbage dump, with a vast beard the color of a dung-heap, dressed from head to foot in layers and rags, and in the company of a swarm of buzzing flies. A god, perhaps? A pagan divinity? Who can tell! After a brief tete-a-tete, this earthy apparition endows the young boy with a rare gift: an internal "duoclock" that allows him to see into the future and at the same time exist in the present with an uncommon fullness. Meet Timeskipper. Timeskipper sees and foresees the epochal events of his era, from postwar reconstruction to the birth of television - from the golden age of rock'n'roll to the revolutionary sixties and the turbulent seventies. These events are tenderly offset by his own private experiences: his first love, his first job, leaving home, hilariously wild adventures with oddball acquaintances. A moving and inventive satiric tale in which imagination defies corruption and conformity, in which the innocence of yesteryear comes face-to-face with the moral aridity of today's money-obsessed society, Timeskipper is one of Stefano Benni's most touching and enduring creations. Colored by Benni's trademark linguistic inventiveness and irresistible humor, this is a coming-of-age story with a difference.

The Barber of Seville; Or, the Useless Precaution (Dodo Press)

Author: Pierre Augustin Caron De Beaumarchais
Publisher:
ISBN: 1409951995
Pages: 132
Year: 2008-12-01
Pierre-Augustin Caron de Beaumarchais (1732-1799) was a watch-maker, inventor, musician, politician, fugitive, spy, publisher, arms-dealer, and revolutionary (both French and American). He was best known, however, for his theatrical works, especially the three Figaro plays. Beaumarchais is well remembered for his essential support for the American Revolution. Louis XVI, who did not want to break openly with England, allowed him to found a commercial enterprise, Roderigue Hortalez and Co., supported by the French and Spanish crowns, whose real purpose was to supply the American rebels with weapons, munitions, clothes, and provisions. Shortly after Voltaire's death in 1778, he set out to publish Voltaire's complete works, many of which were banned in France. While the venture proved a financial failure, Beaumarchais was instrumental in preserving many of Voltaire's later works which otherwise might have been lost. His Figaro plays are indicative of the change in social attitudes before, during, and after the French Revolution. His works include: The Barber of Seville; or, The Useless Precaution (1773) and The Follies of a Day; or, The Marriage of Figaro (1778).

The Final Years of Marilyn Monroe

Author: Keith Badman
Publisher: Aurum Press Limited
ISBN: 1781310513
Pages: 280
Year: 2012-06-21
DIV In his illuminating, fascinating book, Keith Badman finally uncovers the truth about the icon’s last years. It was a tough time – one in which the star’s increasingly erratic behaviour and dependence on alcohol and medication plunged her glittering movie career into drastic decline. Meticulously researched, the book reveals precisely how Monroe died at just thirty-six years of age, and shines a light on the suspicious delays on the night of her overdose – delays that indicate a cover up. He discovers new details about her rekindled relationship with Joe DiMaggio, and the horrendous weekend she spent at Frank Sinatra’s Cal-Nevada lodge, as well as why Fox refused to let her finish her final movie Something’s Got to Give, and her distress at being imprisoned at the Payne Witney psychiatric hospital. Drawing on private, previously unpublished itineraries and original eye-witness accounts, Badman sheds new light on Marilyn’s involvement with John and Bobby Kennedy, and ends a six-decade-old mystery by telling the precise date of her first encounter with the President. The Final Years of Marilyn Monroe features a deluge of stories of which even the most die-hard fan will be unaware. /div

Ordeal Therapy

Ordeal Therapy

Author: Jay Haley
Publisher: Crown House Pub Limited
ISBN: 1935810057
Pages: 213
Year: 2011
Now available once again, in this classic book noted therapist Jay Haley explains how and why ordeals work in therapy. With the ordeal technique, the therapist's task is easily defined: It is to impose an ordeal appropriate to the problem of the person who wants to change, an ordeal more severe than the problem. The main requirement of an ordeal is that it should cause distress equal to or greater than that caused by the symptom, just as a punishment should fit the crime. If an ordeal isn't severe enough to extinguish the symptom, it can be increased in magnitude until it is. Haley explains how ordeals can succeed in promoting change even in cases with long histories of therapeutic failure, and describes the use of different kinds of ordeals. Problems discussed include psychosomatic symptoms, uncontrollable and violent children, separation and divorce, anxiety, incontinence, sexual frustration, alcoholism, speech blocks, and depression.
