A lonely expatriate encounters a mysterious American couple Even as a child, Joseph Lennox was happy to live in his older brother Ross’s shadow. Sadistic and charming, Ross was blossoming into a teenage rebel when one day, down by the train tracks, Joe inadvertently shoves him onto the third rail. After that fatal afternoon, Joe tried to blend into the shadows, fleeing to Austria as soon as he graduated college. Now he lives in Vienna, enjoying the cozy dullness of empty cafés and old movie theaters, doing his best to forget the day he watched his brother die. But death is not through with Joe Lennox. India and Paul Tate are the first Americans he has befriended since settling in Vienna, and it isn’t long before their budding friendship takes a strange turn, exposing a dark passion that Joe thought he left behind long ago, beside his brother’s electrocuted body and the hot third rail. This ebook contains an all-new introduction by Jonathan Carroll, as well as an exclusive illustrated biography of the author including rare images from his personal collection.
Islam and the Problem of Black Suffering

Islam and the Problem of Black Suffering

Author: Sherman A. Jackson
Publisher: Oxford University Press, USA
ISBN: 0195382064
Pages: 222
Year: 2009
In his controversial 1973 book, Is God a White Racist?, William R. Jones sharply criticized black theologians for their agnostic approach to black suffering, noting that the doctrine of an ominibenevolent God poses very significant problems for a perennially oppressed community. He proposed a 'humanocentric theism' which denies God's sovereignty over human history and imputes autonomous agency to humans. By rendering humans alone responsible for moral evil, Jones's theology freed blacks to revolt against the evil of oppression without revolting against God. Sherman Jackson now places Jones's argument in conversation with the classical schools of Islamic theology. The problem confronting the black community is not simply proving that God exists, says Jackson. The problem, rather, is establishing that God cares. No religious expression that fails to tackle the problem of black suffering can hope to enjoy a durable tenure in the black community. For the Muslim, therefore, it is essential to find a Quranic/Islamic grounding for the protest-oriented agenda of black religion. That is the task Jackson undertakes in this pathbreaking work. Jackson's previous book, Islam and the Blackamerican (OUP 2006) laid the groundwork for this ambitious project. Its sequel, Islam and the Problem of Black Suffering, will solidify Jackson's reputation as the foremost theologian of the black American Islamic movement.

On December 21, 2012, the Mayan calendar will end. Many see it as an apocalyptic sign. But is it? In The Twelfth Insight, the long-awaited fourth book in the beloved Celestine Series, we again follow our Hero and his close friend Wil. They have just received a portion of another ancient and mysterious manuscript that describes a secret approach to spirituality that is silently arriving in the second decade of the 21st Century. But the manuscript is only available in fragments. To understand its full meaning for mankind, our Hero and Wil begin an urgent search to find the message in its entirety. As they embrace the power of Synchronicity and begin their search, they are confronted by powerful political forces and religious extremists that stand in the way of these spiritual revelations. Utilizing what he calls the "parable effect," and based on his own sources, James Redfield explores the similarities and differences that exist among the world religions, revealing the essential messages contained within them that can energize our experience of spirituality-- and produce a new wave of integrity and reform that can transform our lives and our world.
