A Clockwork Apple
Author: Belinda Webb
At last - an antithesis to chick-lit. Set in a dystopic Manchester, A Clockwork Apple introduces Alex, an angry young heroine for our times who rages against the middling 'Blytons' and all they stand for. Her gang is all female, the state's control is exercised through addiction therapy, and Alex's solace is in high literature and postmodern deconstructionism!
Author: B. Joseph Pine II, Kim C. Korn
Publisher: Berrett-Koehler Publishers
" Joseph Pine and Jim Gilmore’s classic The Experience Economy identified a seismic shift in the business world: to set yourself apart from your competition, you need to stage experiences—memorable events that engage people in inherently personal ways. But as consumers increasingly experience the world through their digital gadgets, companies still only scratch the surface of technology-infused experiences. So Pine and coauthor Kim Korn show you how to create new value for your customers with offerings that fuse the real and the virtual. Think of the Xbox Kinect, which combines virtual video games with a powerful physical dimension—you play by moving your own body; new apps that, when you point your smartphone camera at a real street, overlay digital information about the scene onto the image; and virtual dashboards that track the real world, moment by moment. Digital technology offers limitless opportunities—you really can create anything you want—but real-world experiences have a richness that virtual ones do not. So how can you use the best of both? How do you make sense of such infinite possibility? What kinds of experiences can you create? Which ones should you offer? Pine and Korn provide a profound new tool geared to exploring and exploiting the digital frontier. They delineate eight different realms of experience encompassing various aspects of Reality and Virtuality and, using scores of examples, show how innovative companies operate within and across each realm to create extraordinary customer value. Follow them out onto the digital frontier to discover the opportunities that abound for your business. "
When will the war finally come to an end? Home Front: Viet Nam and Families at War recounts the private ordeals of several families who bore the brunt of Americas war in Viet Nam. Their experiences, an ongoing tragedy since the last U.S. soldiers left Vietnamese soil, reveal the physical and psychological wounds of war wounds that dont discriminate between soldier and family. From the backwoods of Maine to the rugged wide open landscape of Montana, we meet a dozen soldiers and their families and hear their stories. Author Willard D. Gray knows the fallout firsthand. His oldest son spent two years and eighteen consecutive days in Viet Nam as a BAMC trained medic, most of his tour served in the bush or in the grist mill of an evac. hospital. When Willards son returned home in April 1970 without an honorable discharge, the Gray family endured several months of tension, anger, and disappointment. Tommy Gray had come home a completely changed young man. Exhaustive efforts by his family to upgrade his discharge status and remove the stigma placed upon him and those closest to him ultimately failed to reunite the family. But Willards crusade on behalf of his son soon grew to include others in the community who had also been traumatized and marginalized by the war. A national tragedy became a personal quest. Others who had been left to their own devices after the war, with no help from the government or their local communities, surely needed support.

This book enhances knowledge on Impounded Water Bodies (IWB) systems of the interested parties. They include academicians, scholars, scientist, researchers, engineers, undergraduate and postgraduate students. Specifically this book is valuable for everyone involved in water, hydrology, environment, civil engineering and other related disciplines. This book emphasized modelling and simulation of IWB particularly; Reservoir and Detention Pond, in relation to the two major hydrological problems; Flood and Water Pollution. The knowledge presented is useful for hydrological systems real phenomenon replication and prediction. This book also provides IWB general overview, in terms of the preliminary and state of the art analysis which may trigger the interest for further research and investigations. The IWB related factors were integrated to provide the quantitative framework, alternative approaches and valuable outcomes that lead to worthy policy establishment. This book covers topic related to nutrient (phosphorus) loadings estimation using the new version of Event-Based Stochastic Model in reservoir systems. The detention pond systems modelling using Analytical Probabilistic Models (APM) and the optimization of detention time using Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) are elaborated. It is hoped that the book provides useful knowledge in pursuit of the IWB sustainable development. Dr Supiah Shamsudin is an Associate Professor in Water Resources and Hydrology at the Razak School of Engineering and Advanced Technology, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia - Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. She obtained Bachelor of Science (Civil Engineering) from University of Miami, USA and Master of Science (Hydrology and Water resources) from University of Nebraska - Lincoln, USA. She later obtained Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Civil Engineering from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia in 2003. Her main specialization is Impounded Water Bodies Engineering and Management. Her research interest include intelligent detention pond design, watershed and reservoir management under uncertain environment, environmental hydrology, reservoir eutrophication, fuzzy and risk related approaches and multicriteria decision support for water resources systems. She had extensive involvements in international peer reviewed indexed journal publications and presented at many national and international conferences. Dr Salisu Dan’azumi is currently a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Civil Engineering, Bayero University Kano - Nigeria. He holds a Bachelors degree (Civil Engineering) and Masters degree (Water Resources and Environmental Engineering) from Bayero University Kano - Nigeria in 1998 and 2006 respectively. He obtained a PhD degree in Hydrology from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia in 2012. His research interest include: multi-objective optimization of water resource systems using particle swarm optimization, risk and uncertainty analysis and surface water quality modelling. He has authored and co-authored many papers in international peer reviewed journals and conferences.

The Snows of Olympus
Author: Arthur C. Clarke
Publisher: Hachette UK
This is the story of how a world could be resurrected¿ Mars is a barren planet, almost without atmosphere and with a temperature ranging from near zero to 120 degrees below. No water flows and there is no evidence that life has ever existed there. Yet Mars is Earth's near neighbour and has always exerted a powerful hold on our imagination. The astronomer Lowell thought he'd discovered canals on the planet's surface; H.G. wells (and his near namesake Orson) speculated on the red planet's inhabitants invading Earth; sf writers have always used Mars as a setting and continue to do so. In the Snows of Olympus Arthur C. Clarke uses a revolutionary computer program to show, in words and pictures, how the surface of the planet would change as, gradually, scientists created an atmosphere and raised the temperature. Taking as his starting point Olympus Mons, the highest mountain in the Solar System, a 27km extinct volcano, Clarke creates detailed 'photographs' of the Martian surface and then shows how the landscape would change as vegetation began to thrive and water to flow. He speculates about how this might happen, about the journey to Mars and about what living on the planet would be like. The result is one of the most fascinating, challenging and imaginatively stimulating books of the year. Arthur C. Clarke has long been hailed as the most visionary and accurate of science fiction and non-fiction writers, having predicted communications satellites years before their development. In this extraordinary booked he chart the next chapter of humanity's future in space.
