New York University, New York, New York Polycyclic aromatic carcinogens are
generated during various combustion processes and are emitted into the
atmosphere. Because of the widespread presence of these molecules in the
environment, there has been growing concern about their possible effects on
human health (Guerin, 1978).

The decay of luminescence following cessation of excitation is characterized by a
very broad distribution of lifetimes which has been ascribed to the necessity for
electrons to tunnel from localized conduction-band states to the hole. Since the
localization length associated with the tail states decreases as one proceeds
down in energy, tunnelling becomes more difficult as the electron distribution
sinks into the tail. Time-resolved studies of luminescence and ODMR (optically

In determining the influence of foreign impurities on the unactivated
luminescence of Rb1 we used traces of Tl and In. We had no Rbl—Tl I crystals
capable of revealing unactivated luminescence (Fig. 5c). The emission band of Tl
in Rb1 is very close to the bands of unactivated luminescence (Amax ~ 425 mu)
and it might be expected that the activator band would overlap the short-wave
bands, giving unresolved luminescence from several kinds of centers in the
emission spectrum.

A record of observation of luminescence from ZnS has a long history (Leverenz,
1950; Shionoya, 1966), it dates back to 1 886, when a French chemist Sidot
found phosphorescence from ZnS crystals he grew. Various luminescence
phenomena, which later evolved modern lamps or displays, were discovered
from the end of 19th century to early 20th century. During this period extensive
and systematic studies on luminescent materials were carried out by Lenard. His
works (Lenard ...
